At A Glance

This Shroom and Gloom double deckbuilder page is the combat-versus-explore split: one Combat Deck for fights, one Explore Deck for rooms, and a Foresight pile that is not a third hand. Shroom and Gloom from Team Lazerbeam, published by Devolver Digital, is a first-person roguelike on Steam Early Access (September 10, 2026, App 3271280). You must build both decks or the run stalls before The Gloom. Verified September 12, 2026.

What is a Shroom and Gloom double deckbuilder?

A normal deckbuilder asks you to win fights with one pile. Shroom and Gloom asks you to win rooms and fights with two. Official store language is blunt: Combat keeps you alive in battles; Explore navigates dungeons, modifies cards, and unlocks weapons and abilities. That is the Shroom and Gloom double deckbuilder rule, not a flavor line. If you only draft slash cards, you still need a way through locked tunnels, cold rooms, and a camp that actually lights.

Early Access ships two pathways toward The Gloom, each with its own explore-plus-combat pool. Card Inspector exists so you can read a card on a small screen. There is no skill tree. Progression is growth, modification, Foresight, and quest unlocks. Demo leftover talk (26 tunnels, hidden Foresight) is history, not a second storefront. After this section you should be able to say the split out loud — then we put Combat on the table.

Shroom and Gloom combat deck versus explore deck split

Two decisions, one run

Combat asks how you deal damage and recover Headpoints after a hit. Explore asks how you open, search, warm, and mutate the next card. Community writeups of the loop also note a standing Bash option: a door you cannot key still opens, at the cost of player damage, so a fight that ends on fumes can brick the next room. Treat Bash as community-observed until your UI matches; the official rule you can already play is still “build both.”

What this page will not do

Named card math lives on card list. Class kits live on characters. Pathway pools live on paths. Eat, roast, and soup live on eat & soup. This page only teaches the split so those pages have somewhere to hang.

What does the Combat Deck actually do?

Combat is the fight hand. Official verbs: hack, slash, roast, eat. You play attacks, line combos, and turn fungal foes into food instead of stacking a block wall. Season, skewer, and roast belong here as fight actions that feed the heal loop — the kitchen writeup is on eat & soup, but the cards that start that chain sit in Combat. Grow a starter slash into something ugly; modify a rare into a run-breaker. That growth is still a Combat story even when an Explore card did the mutate.

You do not “win” by never taking damage. Official pitch is less blocking, more eating. Community footage also shows absorb-style cards that cancel instances of damage below a number, which is not a traditional shield stack — label that community until your tooltip agrees. Either way, the Combat Deck’s job after a swing is to leave you with enough Headpoints to Explore, not to freeze the enemy forever.

Attacks, roast, eat, combos

Keep a kill plan and a chew plan. A roast that creates a Toasty (community name for a cooked leftover) is Combat producing Explore/heal fuel. A combo that only looks pretty on a full hand still fails if you cannot eat after. Boss rooms on bosses are still Combat — they just punish a pile that never learned to chew.

What Combat is not

Combat is not maps, lockpicks, shovels, or campfires. Those are Explore tools. Parking a shovel in the fight hand because “it is a card” is how a Shroom and Gloom double deckbuilder run dies in a hallway with a perfect slash leftover.

What does the Explore Deck actually do?

Explore is the between-fights hand. Official verbs: navigate, search, unlock, modify cards, camp, warmth. Tools named in public copy include shovels, lockpicks, and campfires. You reveal rooms, break or fix objects, feed, ignite torches, and change cards before the next encounter. Warmth from torches, campfires, and effects like Burning Sensation cuts hazard risk on the next stretch — Paperboy’s fire kit is the starter example; details stay on characters and eat & soup.

Community footage of Explore also shows: dig sites and rocks that are not guaranteed in every room; rest at a camp that heals once, then later rests at the same site costing Headpoints (observed −2) in exchange for a redraw; keys in the pile versus Bash when you miss the draw. Those numbers and names stay labeled community. Official truth you can already use: Explore is the only deck that opens the dungeon and mutates the Combat pile.

Shroom and Gloom explore deck unlocking a door

Tools that are not combat

Shovel for dig. Lockpicks (and similar unlock cards) for doors and boxes. Campfires for warmth and rest. Maps and search cards for what the room is hiding. If a pickup says modify, it is usually an Explore gift to Combat — spend it on a card you will still hold in the next fight, not on a one-off you are about to consume.

Warmth is Explore insurance

Cold rooms and Gloom pressure are why camp exists. A Combat-only draft that never lights a fire walks into hazards with no Explore answer. Facility gunk and machine locks belong on paths; do not invent a third Explore resource here. If the UI shows Gunk or Data, treat those as path-local until this wiki versions them.

Is Foresight a third deck I draw every turn?

No. Foresight is a small pile of run-long passives — premonitions that fire on explore, combat, feed, or start-of-room triggers. Official and site copy both reject the “third hand” reading. You keep one that matches how you already play (Always Looking making a Keen Eye when explore starts, Generous drawing when you feed, Comfort Food when Headpoints are low — names from public lists, effects TBA-verify in your build). Demo talk about keeping one Foresight after a clear is history for the free tunnel set, not a promise that EA hands you a third draw pile.

There are also in-hand passives on Combat or Explore cards (community example: Toothpicks creating a cheap hit when you eat). Those are still cards in a real hand, which is the opposite of Foresight. Do not merge the two systems because both say “passive.” Full lookup: Foresight.

Shroom and Gloom Foresight passives versus the two playable decks

How to pick one

If you already roast and eat, take a feed-or-food trigger. If you already camp and search, take an explore-start trigger. If you took a class with a unique starter Foresight on characters, keep it until a found one is strictly the same job done better. Slotting a combat Foresight onto an Explore-starved pile does not invent a third deck.

Which deck should I feed this pickup?

Use the checklist in order on loop one. The table is the fork when Combat greed and Explore tools fight for the same add. This is the combat vs explore decision, not a tier list.

If you must pick oneDo thisDo not do this
Slash vs shovelKeep a dig/unlock in ExploreFifth attack with no room tool
Key vs BashHold a key if you drew itBash every chest at 2 Headpoints (community cost)
Camp vs extra fight cardLight warmth before a cold biomeSkip campfires because Combat “looks done”
Modify now vs laterStamp the attack you replayMutate a consume you will eat this room
Foresight vs extra rareOne matching passiveA third pile you try to draw every turn
Food in shop vs healBank a chew for the next fightSell the last edible because Combat felt strong (community shop = food)
  • Do01Name the two piles before you draft: Combat fights; Explore opens, warms, and modifies
  • Do02Add a shovel, lockpick, or campfire to Explore before you stack a fifth slash
  • Do03Keep roast/eat in Combat so Headpoints recover without a block wall
  • Do04Spend modify cards on a Combat attack you will still hold
  • Do05Slot one Foresight that matches the loop you already run — not a third hand
  • Do06Leave Headpoints for the next door (community: Bash costs HP if you miss keys)
  • Do07Then eat on eat & soup instead of hunting a shield card

Why do dual-deck runs stall in Early Access?

The expensive mistakes rhyme. A Combat museum with no lockpick. An Explore toolbox that never learned to roast. Foresight treated as extra draws. A camp skipped until hazards delete Headpoints. Quest unlocks delayed because you never discovered enough cards — that last one belongs on quests, but it starts when you refuse to play both piles. EA will add a third pathway and more classes; it will not add a rule that says one deck is enough.

Mechanical deletes

Softlock-by-unlucky-key is why Bash exists in community footage: the door still opens, you still pay HP. Rest-spam on the same camp (community: heal once, then −2 for a redraw) is how “safe rest” becomes a bleed. Absorb is not a shield wall. Food as shop currency (community) means the Combat heal pile is also the wallet — emptying it for a shiny Explore gadget can starve the next fight.

Knowledge deletes

Inventing a complete 900-card ranking, a third playable hand, or exact soup recipes belongs in fanfic. Mark TBA. Community Bash/camp/Toothpicks notes stay labeled community. Patch talk belongs on Discord; durable split rules stay here. After one clean dual-deck loop, go cook on purpose.

FAQ

What is the Shroom and Gloom double deckbuilder rule in one line?

Combat Deck fights (attacks, roast, eat, combos). Explore Deck navigates, searches, unlocks, modifies, camps, and warms. You must build both.

Is Foresight a third hand?

No. Foresight cards are run-long passives, not extra cards you draw every turn. See Foresight.

Can I ignore Explore if Combat is strong?

No. Locked rooms, cold hazards, and card modifies live on Explore. A fat Combat pile still needs shovel, lockpicks, and campfires.

Where do roast and eat live?

Fight actions sit in Combat; the heal/soup script is on eat & soup. Official line: less blocking, more eating.

What tools belong in the Explore Deck?

Navigate, search, unlock, modify, camp, warmth. Named examples: shovel, lockpicks, campfires.

Is Bash official?

Community-observed: always-available door open that costs Headpoints. Verify in your UI. Do not treat the HP number as Steam law.

How many pathways and cards?

Two EA pathways with unique pools, about 300 explore + combat cards each. A third path is planned. Full dump stays TBA on card list.

Are there Roblox codes?

No. Paid Steam Early Access. Code DMs are scams.
